About the Culture Wing

Established in 1990, Culture Wing promotes new talents in music, dance and drama. It also presents classical music programmes, Mushaira and Kavi Sammelan. It organises annual music & dance festivals and lecture demonstrations by experts.

It arranges annually, play festival comprising plays in different languages and also Marathi Sangeet Natak Mohotsava, trying its effort in reviving the dying art. An annual Megh Malhar features recitals by some of the leading contemporary singers along with promising younger artistes. It also features instrumental recitals by leading musicians.

In 1996, the Wing undertook the production and presentation of dance-drama ballet “Aradhana”. The story of this ballet owes its existence to the first ballet titled ‘Indra Sabha’ presented in India in the court of Wajid Ali Shah in year 1853, written by Agha Hasan Amanat, an adaptation of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore’s dance-drama “Shap Mochan”.

The Culture Wing went on presenting one successful dance ballet after the other viz. “Parchhaiyaan”- The Reflection, a ballet based on Indian freedom struggle (1997), “Ashta Nayika” – based on eight varied stage of women’s life as prescribed by Bharata in Natyashastra (1999) , “Prateek” – ballet based on spiritual and secular symbolism (2005), “Sanskriti” – based on amalgamation of traditional and contemporary arts (2007), “Meghdoot” – based on Kalidasa’s greatest poem (2009), “Vistaar” – based on amalgamation of tradition, continuity and change (2011), “Discovery of India” – based on epilogue penned by Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru (2013), “Begum Hyder Mahal” –ballet based on life of Quli Qutub Shah (2014), “Megh Malhar” – based on Malhar ragas (2014), “Maikhaar” – based on man’s urge for Knowledge (2015), “Discovery of India – The Scientific Perception’, a journey reflecting the scientific approach of the past and present (2015), “Megh Malhar” – ballet on music and dance (2016), “Discovery of India – Insaniyat Ka Zakheera (The Humanity)”, a balled based on historical facts of our glorious past (2017), “Megh Malhar” – impact of rain through sounds of instruments (2018), “Katha Rutunchi – based on Kalidasa’s Ritusamhara (2020).
